From Barn to Beach: My 10-Minute Transformation Routine for Equestrians on the Go

There’s nothing quite like the magic of a day that starts with horses and ends on the water. But if you’ve ever gone from mucking stalls to sipping a cocktail on the dock, you know the struggle is real—dusty boots, sun-drenched skin, and hair that’s seen things.

I live for this crossover lifestyle: boots in the morning, bikini by afternoon. Over the years, I’ve perfected my post-barn-to-beach routine. It’s quick, no-fuss, and doesn’t require an entire trunk of products. Whether you're heading out for a spontaneous beach trip or planning a boat day right after your ride, here’s my go-to routine to freshen up and feel fabulous—without the luxury of a long shower or glam squad.

1. Fresh Face First

The first thing I reach for is a quick face wipe or gentle foaming cleanser (if I’m lucky enough to have a sink nearby). It gets the dust and sweat off without drying me out. You’d be amazed

at what a difference clean skin makes. I keep a pack of these wipes in my tack trunk and beach bag—total game changer.

2. Sunscreen, Always

Even if I already applied sunscreen earlier, I reapply with a lightweight SPF that works great for my face and won't clog my pores or cause a breakout. Check out MURAD Resurgence SPF 50. It’s a non-negotiable—especially when I’m headed into full sun. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Cay Skin's SPF Tanning Oil or Banana Boat Tanning Oil SPF for my body. It gives me that sun-kissed glow while protecting my skin from sun damage. It’s luxe, non-greasy, and smells like summer in a bottle.

3. Deodorant Touch-Up

I don’t typically wear perfumes at the barn (flies love fragrance), but I’ll swipe on a bit of extra deodorant before heading out. I love this aluminum free deodorant. If you like to feel extra fresh, you could spritz a beachy body mist like Sol de Janeiro, but I tend to keep it simple. The tanning oil smells good, too.

4. Barn-Chic to Beach-Bombshell

My barn clothes go off and a lightweight, easy outfit goes on. I love something that’s both breezy and flattering—Think a flowy sundress you can toss on without a second thought, a cute cover-up that does all the work for you, or even cotton shorts with a beachy two-piece set—like the hoodie-and-shorts combo I snagged from a little surf shop and basically live in all summer. This one is my current favorite: it transitions from "I may have hay in my bra" to "I’m ready for rosé on the boat" in seconds.

5. Swimsuit Swap

When I’m packing my swimsuit, it always depends on the mood. Some days I’m feeling sporty and chill, other days I’m all about sweet and sexy—or let’s be honest, a total flirt. I pack my favorite bikini right in my beach bag so I can slip into it once I get to the water. This one’s been on repeat all season—it’s flattering, fun, and gives just the right amount of sass. Want something with more coverage or a different vibe? I’ve linked a few other favorite suits here so you can find your perfect match, whatever your beach mood.

6. Grab the Beach Bag

My beach bag lives in my car during the summer. Inside: towel, flip-flops, SPF, extra hair tie, oversized water bottle, and usually a snack (because horses + heat = hunger). And I don’t know about you, but I get hangry. I use this bag because it’s big enough for everything but doesn’t look like I’m moving in.

7. Shiny, Happy Lips

I’ll swipe on Cay Skin's SPF 30 Lip Gloss—it gives me a glossy, hydrated look without feeling sticky. Plus, it protects my lips from burning (which happens way faster than you’d think).

8. Hat & Sunnies On

My finishing touch: a wide-brim hat or a Baseball Cap and oversized sunglasses. Not only do they scream “I woke up like this,” they’re practical for sun protection and disguising helmet hair. This pair of sunnies lives in my center console and makes me feel instantly pulled together. While I’ve linked my go-to favorites, if you want to browse more styles—from glam oversized to classic and chill—you can check out a few more here.

9. Slide into Sandals

Lastly, I ditch my boots and throw on a pair of sandals—usually something cushy but cute like these. If you’ve ever tried jamming tired feet into stiff shoes after a ride, you know: comfy wins every time.

You don’t need an hour or a fancy locker room to go from barn to beach—you just need the right tools (and maybe a good playlist for the drive). Whether you’re catching the sunset, lounging with friends, or heading out on the boat, this routine helps me feel confident and refreshed in under 10 minutes.

Want to try my must-haves? I’ve linked all my favorite items throughout the post. I only share what I actually use and love—because we barn girls don’t have time for anything less than practical and pretty.

A little toast to slow afternoons and salty air.
